Brian Insley's older brother was into racing and drifting when he was a teenager, and he always helped him work on his car and learned as he went. " He had a Nissan 240SX with a SR20DET motor," remembers Insley, "so that, and like every kid growing up playing with Hot Wheels, got me into cars ."
He bought a 1996 Nissan 200SX SE-R for only $200. "The kid that was selling it couldn't figure out what was wrong with it," mentions Insley. "Sometimes it would start, sometimes it wouldn't do anything for weeks . He thought it was the alarm system. So I bought it from him hoping it was something I could fix." Just by chance, Insley found that it was just a bad battery terminal, "the car ran and drove perfectly fine after."
The 200SX didn't have a grill on it, and rather than spending $30 at a junkyard, Insley, having a background in art, went with something different. "I made teeth out of an old rabbit cage I had laying around," he mentions, "I cut them out with a grinder and hand-painted it." The custom modifications snowballed from there. As a fan of rat rods, Insley decided to grind all the paint off the car and sprayed it with a vinegar-peroxide mix out of a bottle to achieve the rust look. His artistic side just kept flowing.
"I originally thought people would hate it, and talk mess to me, but I took it to my first meet and everyone ended up loving it. I was really surprised!" Insley eventually received an award at his very first car show with the 200SX in competition. "I haven't stopped since then," mentions Insley.
" I pretty much built the whole car by myself," states Insley, "and learned a lot from the journey."
