Living in the city with no parking Richard Beernaert has no need for a car. "I strictly have a very expensive hobby," he laughs. Beernaert sold his one-year old BRZ and bought a 1997 Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4. "I was bored," states Beernaert. "I wasn't used to a car just starting, on its own power, and by pushing a button to start!
Beernaert always loved Japanese cars growing up."It was my dream to build an EM1 Civic," he states, "and at one point I bought an EK hatchback. It was towed over and dropped in my driveway, but on the next morning it was stolen and never found!" Currently, Beernaert is driving the Legnum wagon. "It's really the coolest car I've owned. It's a 6A13TT, and has plenty of oil smells and vacuum leaks."
The turbos are very healthy and the car is definitely quicker than Beernaert expected. "I will always be drawn to 'older' cars, or at least of that period. It smells of oil, it leaks coolant, and occasionally doesn't start, and that's why I love it - it has personality, character and its just a car."
Beernaert doesn't want his car to be perfect, "I want it to be unique and special to me," he explains, "and I want to know that I get my hands dirty to keep a car on the road, because that's almost more enjoyable than driving it."
